Latte Quilt Revisited with Machine Embroidery

Latte Quilt Simplified

The original Latte Quilt as produced from the Bernina book is a wonderful work of fiber art, stress very heavily the word work!  The original has a lot of hand manipulation and lots of steps to produce each block.  In this simplified version, all of the hand manipulation has been relegated to the embroidery machine. No marking, measuring, or decorative machine stitches are necessary. Everything is done in the hoop.

The other change from the original is the center medallion has been eliminated.  In this version, you will select one of the 6 blocks to use in the center of the quilt. This block will be set on point. Then you will choose one of the blocks to be placed in the 4 corners of the quilt.  The 4 remaining blocks will fill in the space around the center.

In this simplified version, we are still using the monochromatic, tone on tone color scheme together with the contrast of the shiny satin fabric and quitting cotton to create visual interest.  Three dimensional elements created on tulle and ribbon can be added to create texture.

  • 1 ½  yds Satin/cotton fabric
  • 2 ½  yds cotton fabric
  • 1/2 yd binding fabric
  • 20” fine tulle
  • Light, medium, dark embroidery thread
  • Batting
  • Web mesh stabilizer to fit hoop
  •  Usual sewing equipment ( bobbin thread, scissors, seam ripper, fabric marking pencil, etc)
  •  Embroidery machine with 360  x 200 mm  hoop and accessories

Remember - This is an embroidered block version of the latte quilt.  It has not been quilted or borders put on....just a taste of the quilt to come!
