BLUE RIBBON Bindings with Sue
Class Description:
In this class you will learn 3 different methods for binding your quilts, table-runners, wall-hangings and many other items.
We will cover two types of machine binding, hand sewn binding, flange binding and fold-over binding. Each student will make their own samples of each method to keep and use for future reference. You will also learn how to calculate the amount of binding you need and the yardage requirement for it.
In this class you will learn the basics of binding for your quilts, table runners , wall hangings and
almost anything that is quilted. This is a hands on, so please come to class with the items listed below.
Supplies:
- Fabric for 2 quilt “sandwiches” (use 2 contrasting fat quarters for each, pressed)
- 100% cotton or 80/20 cotton/poly blend batting for each sandwich – same size as your fat quarters
- ½ yard of fabric for binding (we will be cutting and joining binding in class)
- 13” x 13” fabric square (for bias binding)
- Sewing machine in good working order
- New 90/14 universal needle
- ¼” piecing foot – with or without guide
- Stitch in the ditch foot with guide
- 6 ½” x 24” standard ruler
- Either a 60mm or 45mm rotary cutter with a new blade
- Personal cutting mat (mats are available in the classroom for use, but if you prefer your own, please bring it)
- Small pressing iron with mat (irons and mats are available in the classroom for use, but if you prefer your own, please bring it.)
- Wonder clips (medium size)
- 50 weight Cotton thread, coordinate with your quilt sandwich
- Hand sewing needle
In class, we will:
- assemble your “sandwich” (there is a right and wrong side to your batting!)
- cut your binding
You will complete the following samples:
- Handsewn binding – stitch to front, hand stitch back
- Machine stitch binding – stitch to the front and then top (stitch in the ditch) to finish
You will learn the secret to making square corners with no “pig noses”!!
