0. Beginning BASIC Machine Sewing - TEEN (ages 10-16) (Level 0-1)

Beginning Sewing series for Teens (12+) and Adults. 
General Description:

Learn the basics of machine sewing
o   Making a bobbin
o   Threading both upper and bobbin (lower) thread
o   Selecting a stitch
o   Adjusting stitch length & width
o   Sewing in a straight line and reversing
o   Sewing on a curve
o   Making a seam with a particular seam allowance.
o   Cutting thread and removing the fabric from the machine
Proper methods of cutting fabric
o   Use of scissors & snips
o   Use of rotary cutter
o   Cutting thread on sewing machine
Pressing vs ironing
Time:  2 hours per session

General class supplies:  These items will be provided for class use.

  •       Sewing machine, power cord & foot control
  •       Sewing machine accessories
  •       Iron & Pressing mat
  •       Rotary cutter, ruler & mat

Sewing Kit - students must bring their own kit.  (we have small kits to purchase) containing:
    • Scissors
    • Pins & pin cushion
    • Hand sewing needles (variety pack)
    • Seam ripper
    • Spool of thread to start (white)
    • Tape measure
    • 3 empty class 15 bobbins (see instructor for these)

Session #1:  Learn to Sew Class-Bookmark (Level 0) (2-3 hours)

Description: In this class you will learn the ins and outs of a mechanical sewing machine such as how to thread it, how to wind a bobbin, and how to set the machine’s settings. Once we feel comfortable with the machine, we will teach you how to sew using paper! Lastly, we will use our newly learned skills and put a simple bookmark together!

This class is for people who are just starting their sewing journey. If you have never touched a sewing machine before but want to enter the wonderful world of sewing, then this is the class for you!

Please bring your sewing kit.  All supplies listed below will be provided

Supplies provided at class: 

  •       Practice paper with shapes
  •       Classroom Machines and accessories
  •       Qty (2) Fabric front and back 3” x 7”
  •       Qty (2) Fusible interfacing 3” x 7”
  •       Ribbon
  •       Clips

 


Session #2:  Learn to Sew Class (Level 1)- Pillowcase (1.5-2 hours)

Description: In this class you will practice making a bobbin and threading a mechanical sewing machine.  You will learn how to press, sew straight lines and trim properly. We will be sewing a pillowcase.

Please bring your sewing kit.  All supplies listed below will be provided

Supplies provided at class: 

  •       Classroom Machines and accessories
  •       Clips
  •       Pillowcase kit (you will pick this the day of your class). - Included in your class fee
You can also choose your own 3 fabrics and we will cut a custom kit for you!
  •       Iron & pressing station
  •       Rotary cutter, Ruler & mat 
 

Session #3:  Learn to Sew Class – Zipper bag (Level 2) (1.5-2 hours)

Description: In this class we will be putting all that we’ve learned in the previous classes to the test! We will be making a zipper bag with a denim outside and cotton lining that conveniently matches the mini tote bag we made in the session #3. 

 Please bring your sewing kit.  All supplies listed below will be provided

  •       Classroom Machines and accessories
  •       Clips
  •       Iron & pressing station
  •       Rotary cutter, Ruler & mat
  •       Qty (2) Outer fabric pieces 7”x 5 ½” denim
  •       Qty (2) Inner fabric pieces 7” x 5 ½” cotton
  •       Qty (2) fusible interfacing 7” x 5 ½”
  •       Qty (2) zipper tabs 2” x 3”
