In this class we will show you how to make turned edge applique butterflies that you

can use to embellish the project of your choice. Each wing and body are individually

machine embroidered and then assembled on already quilted background fabric. This

method creates dimension and provides a finely finished project.  There is also an

option to install wire in the wings so they can be manipulated into a 3-dimensional

fabric sculpture. 

This class does not guide you through creating a quilt, bed runner, or pillow. Rather,

we will create one butterfly and attach it to a background of quilted fabric. The piece

you create in class could be used for a pillow or wall hanging.

However, the instructions and embroidery files provided with the class detail the

creation of a swarm of Monarchs flying across a Hoffman Fabric, Dream Big blossom

panel. There are 5 sizes of full winged butterflies and one butterfly viewed from the

side. To create the largest butterfly wings requires a hoop size of 200 x 360 mm.

Included in the instructions are fabric requirements for the complete quilt.

Handouts, in addition to the Majestic Monarchs files, will provide instructions for a

bed runner and a pillow.

Supplies (not included in cost of class):

This supply list is for the creation of a single butterfly (all supplies are available at the

store – don’t forget to tell us you are buying them for a class and receive your 10%

•        ½ yard base fabric for wing and body.
•        ½ yards applique fabric – ombre or batik that determines the color of the
•        butterfly.
•        18” x 18” of quilted fabric (butterfly will be attach to this fabric)
•        Web mesh stabilizer
•        Embroidery thread the same color as the base fabric
•        Fabric glue
•        Fusible web (Soft Fuse or Steam-a-seam lite or Wonder Bond)
•        Light weight florist wire
•        Embroidery machine in good working order with accessories
•        Hoop large enough for embroideries (200x360mm)
•        Scissors
•        Snips
•        Bobbin fill
